Nestled in a former rooming house on a tree-lined street, Sellwood Community House (SCH) is a treasured gem in the Sellwood-Westmoreland community. From preschool to after school care, from individual music lessons to group exercise for all ages, SCH offers something for everyone.
For most of its history, the building has been known as the Sellwood Community Center. During this time, it was managed by the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. Citing budgetary concerns, the city has chosen to no longer support the center. However, because it is such a valued resource, local residents have banded together to save it. The Friends of Sellwood Community Center, formerly a sub-committee of the Sellwood-Moreland Improvement League, therefore spun off to form a separate non-profit to take over the facility and its programs.
In recognition of this fresh start — and nodding to more than 100 years of history — we are returning the building to its original name, Sellwood Community House. The newly-formed non-profit group Friends of Sellwood Community House plans to continue offering a mix of programming and rental space to Portlanders from the neighborhood and beyond.
As we grow and improve the facilities and programs, we hope to serve the area for another hundred years.
